At a time when the nonprofit sector is experiencing a pivotal generational shift in leadership, a new wave of visionary executives is stepping forward—and in San Diego, they’re already building community.
Last month, San Diego’s League of CEO Newbies gathered for their very first in-person meet-up. While most members have been in their roles for less than a year, the sense of connection and purpose was instant. With representation from impactful organizations like Home Start, Serving Seniors, Wakeland Housing, McAlister Institute, San Diego Workforce Partnership, and Townspeople, the group exchanged ideas, challenges, and encouragement—laying the groundwork for what promises to be a dynamic and collaborative peer network.
“It was an honor to sponsor the very first League of CEO Newbies lunch in San Diego,” said John Valencia, CEO of Good For Others Foundation. “It was powerful to see how quickly community forms when mission-driven leaders come together.”
Why This Moment Matters
The gathering wasn't just a networking lunch—it was a reflection of a sector in transition.
According to a 2023 report by the National Council of Nonprofits, nearly two-thirds of nonprofit organizations in the U.S. reported concerns about leadership succession within the next five years. With many long-serving executives preparing for retirement, this shift marks a once-in-a-generation leadership turnover.
That’s why this "new guard" matters. These emerging CEOs bring fresh perspectives, lived experience, and a bold commitment to equity, community impact, and sustainability. As they step into legacy roles, they’re not just continuing the work—they’re reshaping what leadership looks like.
GFOF’s Commitment to the Sector
At Good For Others Foundation, we believe that when nonprofit leaders are supported, the entire ecosystem thrives. That’s why we’re committed to creating more intentional spaces—not just for CEOs, but for HR, Development, Finance, Admin, and Program teams to connect, build trust, and grow together.

This is just the beginning.
